Question:

Tips for a better Attack/Spike..?

I haven't seriously played volleyball in years. To be honest, my timing is terrible, and every hit I do hits the net or flys out of bounds.. However, I have close to a 1 foot reach over the net and should be able to get a good spike down if I were to practice..

I've read tips about opening the hand, about the approach, the foot plant, and the wrist snap.. Is there anything else you can recommend for a better spike?

I'm really looking to improve and believe with my reach over the net, I should be able to get an excellent hit.

Also, I am right handed, can you supply tips on how to efficiently hit on the weak side (2 position).

Thanks in advance..

  1. The most important part of hitting is your footwork...

as a right-handed player your footwork needs to start with a big step with your left foot as you raise both of your arms forward, next you take a mid-size step with right foot as you swing your arms all the way back, then immediately step with your left foot so that it is directly next to your right foot, now as soon as this foot hits the ground push off into the air and swing your arms back up to the front as you push up to help propel you up, then swing away!

  2. with the altitude you hav above the net...

if u hit the ball out, u might be too "under" the ball.

if u hit the ball into the net, perhaps the set was a bit low for u, or u hit the ball too late, or too much in front of u.

if u think ur approach is fine but u still hit the ball out, u could try this, right when u wanna hit the ball in ur usual way, delay 1/2 sec then hit it.  it usually work.

we don't always play the exactly same way all the time.  depending on the day, i usually hav to adjust to my condition on that day everytime when i play.  relax, play more WILL get u better.  practice with an good setter will help a lot.

(gee, i wish i could get a foot above the net... - -")

  3. you nailed the answer with your own comments, you need practice. With time off comes rust, with rust comes lack of confidence, which then leads to over thinking and lack of focus on the actual proper motion's.

With practice and a decent to consistant setter, your previous level will be easily atained. Stop worrying about the errors and concetrate on the positive swings you get.

If your looking to learn to hit weak side you must be very patient, as an opposite side hitter, you need to wait for the ball a little longer as it needs to come accross your body, at 1st cross hitting will be easier than line, but as you learn to wait on the set, hitting line will become easier. The motions are almost the same as hitting power side, a 4 step approach should be as follows (for right handed hitter's plaing opp), Right foot 1st and off the court, then left foot towards net to begin bringing you back to the net, then right foot in towards the net, and finally a 2 foot plant and jump, if the ball is in front of your left should you must hit it cross, if it's in front of your right shoulder( were it belongs) you have the option of hitting line or cross with a slight hand motion.

    BUT

MOST IMPORTANTY understand your probably rusty, and time will get you back. Are you getting the same set every time, probably not unless your using a machine, in wich case getting back will be even harder, but with confidence and practice you will be back to your old self and maybe even better. 75% of all points are won or lost on a player error, so relax, remember vball is about the fun you can have playing and learning, and it will all come to you !!

    Good Luck

  4. I play on a volleyball team to be honest i'm not the best spiker but i would say if your not good at spiking then practice a lot have someone pass the ball to you and just spike it untill your timing is perfect and if you want power in your spike bend your knees and jump and if you know your not going to get it try to move your arms into a vollying or bumping stance.
