Tips for a ds/libero?

i play libero for my club team and im just looking for ways to improve. im very quick on my feet and good at serve receive, passing w/ hands etc. my biggest weakness is covering the deep corners behind the right and left back and also reading the hitters hand. i tend to get sucked in on defense because, although i play middle back, im always left to pick up tips around or over the block because the right and left back are pretty lazy. anyways, any tips on covering deep corners, reading the hitters hand or just any helpful tips? thanks

  1. ok omg lol i no exactly what ur talking about...im a libero also and have been for a while because im short..........ok on the deep corners what i do is i start on the end line/serve line/end of the court for defence and move in as i read the hit....i read the hit by watching the HITTER not the BALL lol i know it seems weird cuz the coaches always tell u opposite but 4 libero it makes a huge difference.....when the are hitting you want to watch 3 main things....

    1. hips

    2. shoulders

    3. wrist/arm

their shoulders are the most important thing to watch when digging but waist and arms of the setter when she is setting her hitters.

hahaha i hope i helped you...... :) good luck!!

  2. you don't go for the tip or the block, thats for the right and left, if they don't bother, it's not your fault because you only get deep, so don't get tips next time and let the right/left back be blamed :p

  3. First what defense are you playing - perimeter where you are asked to stay closer to middle back on any outside hit or rotational where you move towards the corner of the court the ball is set to?

Second what will help the most is reading the situation and adjusting. At middle back you are the last line of defense and have the best views of how the play is developing.

So reconginze the speed of the hitter's approach. Good hitters will continue to make the same speed and same approach as often as possible to be deceptive but not all. Slower could mean tip or roll. Look at the angle of their hips - while the shoulders will ultimate direct the ball the hips can give away angle or line approaches. Last be in position to see the hitter around the block. The "nose knows" - if a players is looking up (nose in the air) the want to hit high and deep or possibly tip (see reading the set in a previous answer). If the player's nose is lower they are coming full swing trying to put it down. Another idea is watch warm ups if your coach will let you and observe all you can in 4 to 5 minutes. Where to hitters like to go most often. Which direction does the MH cut a 1 or where do they hit the shoot set? Watch the noses as they hit - by the way the nose will also often give away where they are trying to hit. Practice that in your own practice. See how it works.

  4. I play libero to.. Ya it can be hard, if you start in the back corners and move with the ball, Also talk on the court with you team it really helps. watch how the hitter snaps her wrist that is usually where it is going to go.

  5. Yes I have some tips for you. =)

    1. Never give up on any balls even if you look dumb for it.

This will by itself make you much better in time (if you don't already do it).

    2. Try to be stopped with feet planted leaning slightly forward right before the hitter makes contact.

This will help your mobility and reaction time.

    3. Play into the court.

You say that you get sucked in. Start deeper, but make your stance one that will allow you to move forward more easily (see #2).

    4. Reading the hitter.

There is a lot I could tell you here, but much of it takes experience to really catch on. Here are three tips that you can start using right away:

Tip A. If the ball is set to the outside hitter very tight, and the blockers are there, be extra ready for the tip. Most OH's will tip that unless they jump very high or are excellent at tooling.

Tip B. If an outside hitter is set off the net , they will most likely hit cross court. This is true about even very good players. It is a safety shot. High so you don't get blocked, and across the court for longest distance to hit it in. Hitting line for them would be risky.

Tip C. Recognize when the set has been pushed out too far. The antennae will block out some of the line shot they would otherwise have, so DON'T cover what they can't hit.

You can't read an arm swing, or a hand contact, because that is too late. You can read line of approach, shoulder positioning, position of set, and position of block.

Watching a good libero that sees all these situations and more, it seems like they can tell where every ball is going to go.

    Be That Libero
