Question:

Tips for a new cyclist?

Currently I am a runner.

I am training for a full marathon, but I have developed pain in my knees so after I finish this marathon I want to take up cycling.

I was just wondering if anyone has any tips, because I would like to do some local competitions (nothing like having a competition to keep you motivated)

Also if you can offer any helpful websites that would be great as well.

Thank you.

  1. Start by making loops around your home. If you get tired, you can cut the loop short and get home quickly. As your cycling endurance and confidence increase, google for bike routes in your town/city. You'll probably find several. Having routes that are known for low traffic and/or scenic views make long rides more enjoyable.

Of course, a riding partner helps a great deal. Contact a local bike club to see when they have open rides.

  2. Your local bike shop is a good place to start. Be sure you find one that you're comfortable with and that doesn't try to oversell you. Shops are also usually a good place to find info on local routes, clubs, and events. You can also do a google search on bike clubs in your town/area. You don't need to be on a team to compete. But, clubs offer advantages to newcomers and can teach you all the basics rather than struggling on your own.

  3. There's a million tips. Many books have been written on the subject, so where to start?

I guess decide what type of cycling you want to do. Locate a bike club, (ask a bike shop) you will learn so much from other cyclists, they are happy to share their knowledge. Ask questions here and in other forums, pick up a few magazines as well.

EDIT: Bicycling.com, velonews etc are a couple sites. DO a seach on it you'll get pleanty of hits. To get a taste of cycling culture and the race scene, be sure and not miss the Tour de France on VS TV starts in a couple weeks.
