  1. In addition to what Lawnboy & Luna said you want to water in the early morning so the grass has time to dry out and you won't have any fugus problems.

And unless you have bentgrass do not mow any lower than 3 inches until the last few mowings of the season.  Doing so will result in damage to the lawn.  However  if you are in an area where you get snow you want to cut lower than 3 inches for the winter or you will have serious snow mold problems, you may still get some by cutting lower than 3 inches but it won't be as bad and will go away with fertilizer in the spring.

Also make sure your yard gets winterizer in the fall.  The yard will green up much faster in the spring if you do.

  3. Mow whenever the lawn looks a little shaggy.  Mowing too often is better than less often.  You really can't mow too much.

Water once or twice a week, and heavily.  Your lawn wants one inch per week -- get a rain gauge so you actually know the amount it rains or you water.  Do NOT water lightly/frequently -- leads to poor root systems.

Speed of mowing?  As slow as you can tolerate.  Keep your mower blades as sharp as you can -- invest in a bench grinder ($40 or so) and a few files for finishing up the edge.  Big files, 1" wide or more, and a foot long best.

Definitely change direction each time.  Do not mow in circles -- Pick a line across the lawn, and alternate directions.  Next time, pick a new direction, and the lawn will have a faint checkerboard pattern.  Do the outer edge last.

Fertilize four times per year, three if you have a mulching mower.  Save by buying "store brand" fertilizers that have similar component numbers (12-20-5, etc) as the current seasonal Scotts brand.

  4. Spray every 2 weeks with EPSOM SALT!!! the best lawn fertilizer you can get..and kills some insects off too..
