I am going to be in 10th grade next year, and I am trying to make it on varsity. I normally play outside, and I was wondering what exercises and/or drills(that I can do by myself) I could do. Also, what exercises I could do to improve my vertical jump?

  1. do sand training/plyometrics (plyos)

hit the volleyball at the wall as many times in a row as you can

do wall sits to improve your leg muscles

run bleacher sprints to improve your leg muscles

pass the ball to yourself...every good outside should be a great passer

rent out a court a few days a week if possible and run drills with yourself...serve and chase, run lines, pass over and under the net, practice approaches, etc

***hope i helped and good luck!!!

  2. Same with me! I'm a freshman now, outside hitter, and want to be a starting varsity hitter. I sat varsity last year and played JV so hopefully theres some good answers here :).

  3. Work on your approach and definitely your vertical. You can do plyometrics to increase your vert. Has your team ever done formal conditioning? There are these big boxes of differing heights that you jump on and that over time will get your legs stronger so as to jump higher. Once you finally are able to notice a difference, you're going to have to re-work on your approach because your timing will be different now that you can jump higher. Also do a lot of squats, calf raises and jump rope.

  4. Im an outside hitter, too...

I would really get my approach down and do it just as a warm up, like do it at you position and stuff. But other then practicing hitting the ball and doing stretches frequently and do a lot of running exercises, I cant really think of anything else..

  5. set out cones.. jump over each one. It will improve jumping. u may look stupid doing it.. but the results are great!
