Question:

Tips for being a great server?

I recently started working at a restaurant, not a high class place, it's a "Roadhouse" with a pretty laid back atmosphere and I love it. I want to do the best I can to get great tips. I have been observing a guy who works there that makes great tips and of course I know it helps to be really friendly and outgoing. I noticed that certain tables he will sit with the people at their booth while they are talking. I don't know if I have the balls for this because not everyone would want you to sit with them, I guess you can tell by the guest. I need some advice on some great conversation starters and what in the world do you talk about while you are sitting there with them?? lol I am VERY friendly and outgoing but sometimes I have a hard time knowing what to say or how far to take it. Does anybody have any tips?? I would really like to get some feedback from experienced servers but also any advice is appreciated. Thanks!!! :)

  1. I have been working at a restaurant for almost 2 years. I don't know if I would sit with my guest, unless they are regulars and you are familiar with them. Other then that, be yourself. People can tell when you are out for your money and when you are being sincere. I always am friendly with the children and talk to them as well. Parents love that. Another tip is to read your guests. You will be able to tell what kind of mood they are in and what is the best course of action. Keep giving refills, if your place of business has free refills. Make sure they have things they need without having to ask you a whole bunch of questions. Like for example, make sure they are satisfied with their food, before they have to come to you. Fix any mistakes immediately. Just do things the way you would want them done to you if you were the guest. That has always been what I have done, and I feel that I get very good tips off of my tables.

  2. if he is sitting at a table then he must of been working there for a long time, and really knows the people he is with. Right now for you just be your self and do the best you can.

  3. As a decent tipper, I want good and attentive service, but not obcessive. Keep glasses filled, ask questions. Do not sit down with customers unless, the're your friends. Be friendly, not gushy. Thats all I need to give a decent tip.

  4. Work hard, stay organized be friendly and when you s***w up, own up to it right away. Don't try to blame the kitchen or the computer. Your customers will appreciate it and you'll do better for it in the end. I've been in the business for more than thirty years and I've seen every type come through. If you are honest and real, people know it and you'll make good money
