Question:

Tips for camel spin and axel?

by  |  earlier

I don't know sometimes I can get into my camel and sometimes I can't. I just go on my toe pick and totally lose balance.

And if I don't, I don't think I have enough speed and just do a few revs and stop. Do you know how to help this?

As for axel, my coach hasn't taught it to me yet but is it too dangerous to try on ice by myself? I can do waltz jump back spins and waltz jump loops already so yeah... I wanna go for the real thing.

POLL: How long did it take you to land your axel?

Anyways, I'm 15, if that helps.

THANKS!!!

  1. For the camel, make sure you keep your left arm in front until your toepick sort of "hooks" the ice and you start spinning. Then bring your arms to the side, but don't bring them back to your sides or you'll lose balance.

As for the axel, you should talk to your coach first so you learn the right technique and don't start bad habits.

It took me about 9 months to land my axel, but then I lost it and it took me another 3 months after that. My axel is still worse than my double lutz, which took me a month to learn. The axel is a really complicated jump..... :)

  2. i would say you need more curve on your camel spin, it sounds like your making a short entry edge causing you to loose your balance. just take your time and curve. once your comfortable get more speed on the entry and maintain your power through the spin.

as for the axel, i would suggest working on it with your coach.

dont work on it without them or you'll mess it up completely and it will take you months or even years to fix that little mistake you make on it.

it took me 5 months to land my axel. i skated in a very large preliminary competition with 20 girls (yeah, i moved up too fast) without ever landing an axel or a double salchow. then the day after the competition i landed it :P

the crazy thing was i didnt get last.
