Tips for coaching a young girls volleyball or soccer team?

I might be coaching a young girls volleyball team soon, or a young girls soccer team next spring, but I need some tips! I've played both sports so I do have some knowledge of WHAT to coach, but I don't know HOW to coach. Any websites w/tips, drills, etc would be great too. Thanks!

  1. VOLLEYBALL:

ok, so do not be too hard on them, yes maybe a little tuff, and make sure you keep everyone involved don't leave anyone out! if they can't get over hand serve over than try under hand

don't forget to drag their foot when serving....

  2. Make sure you teach them the skills, but do it slowly.  And REPEAT it.  And do not stop from teaching them the skills because you do not think they can learn it.  And REPEAT it.  (You get the idea.)

I just got done with a 5 week camp for 2nd through 6th graders.  We taught the overhand serve starting at the 10 foot line.  And most of my team was almost to the serving line by the end of the 5 weeks.  We taught passing, setting, and spiking.  We lowered the net about 6 inches more and had them spiking.  When we played games, we did a side out for every time anyone hit the ball over on the first hit.  That encouraged 3 hits.

Every practice we did things the same way.

We started at the beginning with serving from the 10 foot line.  And then they could move back one step every time they complete a serve.

The passing drill started with catching the ball with their arms out like they were passing.  Then, we had them cushion the ball.  It is just like a pass, but they tried to keep it about 1 foot off their arms.  And then, we had them pass to a target.

We had them set the ball while sitting, kneeling and then standing.  We started them catching the ball and holding it.  And then setting the ball.

For hitting, we only taught them the final 2 steps.  We held the ball for them to hit it out of our hands.  And then a little toss.  And then tried a real toss to see if they could still hit.

  3. think about the way your coach taught you and just have them warm up and such. i dont know how to coach either but im going to co teach volleyball in a few months too. so im thinking ill just teach kinda the same stuff my coach taught the team

  4. Try USA volleyball

  5. just do all the skills you want to teach in slow motion pointing out all the steps and important skills....

  6. GOARMY on em'

  7. www.volleyballpracticeplans.com, or ask another coach to come in and help you the first few practices

This looks like a good site, but if all else fails teach passing and a lot of it.  I think that you'll find that coaching is not as difficult as u think it is.  Just teach the kids what you know and have fun.  Try to teach them all the basic skill that you need to play at a high level(i.e. footwork, passing, serving, setting, and defensive strategies.)  Try to show them video or take them to a college level game, so they can see how volleyball is suppose to be played.  HAVE FUN!

  8. It really depemds on their age. I don't think I can answer this question without that information. Can you post it?

  9. well for Volleyball I would really teach the the machanics of Volleyball. The basics....serving,spinking,setting, and bumping.

Well for soccer. Same thing. Teach them the basics and work on good plays to trick the other team.
