My boyfriends dad is diabetic, and the doctors told him recently that if he doesn't start eating healthier he could die. The man loves to snack all day, just little things, and then big meals. Does anyone have any ideas on what he could eat thats still yummy but healthy too?

  1. For a diabetic snack use a combination of carbohydrates and protein for best effects on sugar.

Sounds like he should be eating 5-6 smaller meals a day instead of the big meals and snacking. This keeps you from getting hungry so fast and also will keep your blood sugars more level.

    Hope this suggestion will help.

  2. Fat free graham crackers, saltine, sunflower seeds, a peanuts are low calorie, sugar, cholesterol, etc. snacks my dad has because he is diabetic too.

  3. My dad's diabetic and had a hard time getting it under control too...

What really helped him was eating 6 small meals a day.

Three large meals a day for a diabetic tends to spike their blood sugar.

Personally, I love edamame (it's soybeans boiled for a couple minutes and then salted) they're so strangely addicting and very healthy for you too.

Also, my dad snacks on low-carb energy bars (they have flavors like chocolate, etc) or vitamin supplement drinks like Ensure.

The thing is once he gets his diabetes under control he can still have "unhealthy" meals every once in a while like pasta...but he needs to learn portion control. Instead of eating one big plate of pasta, only eat 1/3-1/2 of it and save the rest for later.

    It's all about moderation.

  4. I'm not diabetic, but I got this from a diabetic recipe book and I LOVE IT and so do my kids!!!  If your dad likes ice cream sandwhiches, he'll love this.  You take a graham cracker square (the size you would use to make a smore) and pile on a heaping tblspn of cool whip.  Lightly place another graham cracker square on top like a sandwhich and freeze it.  It tastes just like an ice cream sandwhich!!

  5. Okay today there are many sugar free snacks and candies. Sugar Free  Hard candy to to dissolve slowly in the mouth is a really a good snacking idea.  Also, S.F.(sugar Free) gum.  Plums, air popped popped corn, pickles, and hot peppers are some of my favorites.  A must for him though is to check with his doctor on what he intends to us as snacks.  And, keeping track of how many carbs in everything he eats.  Also his being type two or one makes a difference as to what he can eat.  His Doctor should arrange for him to have classes regarding his food choices.  Most hospitals have classes on diets especially for people with health problems.  And, of coarse exercise will burn off the carbs and curb the appetite.  But, again choose a program with his Doctor.  Best of Luck to him.  Mary, Queen Of Flirts

  6. He snacks all day and then eats big meals?  That is the reason he is diabetic.

There are not many goodies out there unless you are talking about apples, oranges, mangoes, peaches, strawberries, no sugar (Spenda), apricots, plums, dark chocolate with 60% cocoa or greater, eat sparingly.

I have noticed that homecooking is the way to go.  You don't get so much unnecessary sugars that are in prepackaged foods.

Lay off the carbs.  The white bread, white rice, white sugar, Instead eat , sweet potatoes, lean turkey, grilled chicken b*****s marinated in Balsamic Vinegar Oh soooo good!

He needs to learn how to cook.  That is the only way to lose weight.

Lots of people would not even be diabetic if they didn't snack on sugary treats.  Every time you eat sugar or carbs your pancreas creats more insulin so you body can use the carb.  Get up and burn it off.  Turn off the TV, get up and move. Dance, lift weights, be proud of yourself for how you look instead of being an "old man" as my husband calls it.

He had that "old man" stomach.  He has lost over 20 lbs since April.

So many people can get off their diabetic medicine if they just lose weight.

Get on Google and type in "high glycemic" foods and then "low glycemic foods", and look for ehow.  The ehow will explain how different kinds of foods metabolize in your body.

Carbs begin to metabolized first, right in your mouth.  Its interesting.
