  1. A proper pirouette should be done "on the spot" in other words as the horse produces each canter stride while turning the size of the circle the hind legs make should be as small as possible. There should actually be a 3-beat canter happening throughout the entire pirouette. The horse does not pivot on his hind legs. Obviously before concerning yourself with a double pirouette you must first master the single. This requires a great deal of conditioning because of the enormous load on the hind end. Personally, I believe it is more important that the pirouette be executed correctly even if all you get is a 1/4 or half turn to start. Gradually ask for more as your horse gets stronger. If you are already doing a single pirouette properly ask for a 1/4 more and increase accordingly as your horse gets stronger. You will need a really good base of trot, and canter with the ability to lengthen and collect at will, as well as good half passes. Enjoy!

  2. Since this uses hocks and spine, have a good bascuile and flexion, and trot out of each single untill your horse is strong enough to do a double. Freestyle Dressage masters each have thier own style based on the basics: try having your instructor define how large the 'ettes need to be for your music. The larger, more oepn the canter stride used the easier. It looks silly if it is flat, stretch and get those hocks to carry.
