Question:

Tips for growing out a hair relaxer?

I was watching a video of my family when I was about 1 and I loved how wavy my hair was. So, after tomorrow, I've decided not to get another relaxer until Thanksgiving/Christmas. My family says my hair grows fast, but I don't really notice it. I dyed it once back in late Feb. early March and it's grown out about 3 inches, I don't think that's very fast at all. My hair's pretty healthy. I haven't dyed it since.

I've been warned not to do this by my mother. (I'm 16) I got my first relaxer when I was 5 and she keeps telling me how my hair got nappier and kinkier as I got older and using a hot comb would not have worked. But, I'm a bit skeptical. Right now, my hair is really, REALLY thick and after I wash it, you'd think I'd never touched a relaxer kit in my life.

How long will it take? My friend-who's mixed white mom and black dad-grew hers out in about 4 months. Lucky b*****d! I planned on getting my hair cut anyway like Pete Wentz in the A Little Less Sixteen A Litte More Touch Me video. (No, I don't follow celeb trends, it's just that haircut was really cute). But, a little longer. Drastic haircuts upset me.

So, how long will it take to get it naturally at jaw line? Or should I just listen to my mom and not do it at all? Like I said, my hair's thick and kinky now. But the way my hair looked in that old home movie was to die for! I was about 1 then and my mother insists that it went "downhill from there." Any advice? I've been thinking about this for a while.

  1. First mistake was getting a perm at five. Most black mothers mess up their childrens hair. I know my mom did! Anyways I'm going to start going natural next week and I got all my tips from longhaircareforum.com and blackhairmedia.com. I never knew there was so much women interested in hair care like I was. Now I got my plan and I'm so excited for my hair to grow out! I wish you luck :)

  2. I don't think you should grow it out.  Your hair won't be the same as it was when you were one, especially after all of the chemicals in it.  But good luck with whatever you do!

  3. I'll say  do a trial till December if you like the way your new growth is continue if not then stop.I'll suggest you find a good moisturizer and do deep conditioning once a week or once every two weeks (if you are busy with school).Find cute styles to blend the two textures like braid outs, straw sets, somersetting, braiding/weaving or any other style to help you deal with the growth once you enter the difficult phase that's really the 7th,8th...month of the transition. Don't forget that you must  keep moisture and protein balance cause after some times you might experience breakage because of the two textures. Here's an article to help you with that.

  4. I knw what your goin through. I saw pictures when my hair was all flowy and nice and now its all thick... Sorry too say but ur hair neva goin go back how its use too be... I think u should get a relaxer get ya ends cut and get a nice flowy wrap.... if u keep ya  ends cut your hair will grow so much faster..

Every 2-3 weeks get ya ends cut... Get a relaxer every 2-3 months dependin on ur hair...

Hope I helped.. But if u wanna get da relaxer out wash ya hair a lot... dnt blow dry it let it air dry but make sure u comb it out very good...

  5. Well, I hate to be the one to break this to you but that texture of your hair on the movie was BABY hair, and if your mom told you that after a certain age it started to get a little more kinky, that was just your natural grade of hair growing out, and 3 inches from March to August is not a lot. Your friend that's mixed is like that because she has hair that's not fully African American. But a good way to get your hair growing is corn rolls or freestyle (micro braids), and use this treatment called Doo Grow. They make grease, hot oil treatment, shampoo, the works. It took me like a year to get my hair at a nice length, now it is past my clavicle (collar bone). Good Luck!
