Question:

Tips for high school

I'm fourteen years old & switching schools this year going into my first year of high school. I'm moving and will not be with anyone I know.

Could you give me any tips for high school, like making new friends and over-coming shyness? And how to just deal with high school in general. I'm nervous. I've never switched schools before and this is a big deal for me.

Thank you!

  1. My first year of high school i moved to a competley new town. I am now a senior and am friends with pretty much everyone so I think I can help here.

    * Do not tell your personal buisness (everyone is not truly your friend)

    * If you see a person u are infatuated with wait at least a month to make sure they weren't the person in middle school that dated everyone.

    * Avoid fighting

    * Brown nosing to teachers are extremely effective do not let anyone tell you different

    * Do not think you can stand up to upper classmen its to many that would love the oppurtunity to embarrass you because you are a freshman

    * Try to at least maintain a 3.0 gpa ( I know this sounds lame but its this thing called cumlative GPA's and its hard to bring it up by you senior year)

    * Do not lose your text books and do not flirt with upperclassmens girlfriends its not very smart

    * Do not be afraid to approach people to get to know them just know the boundaries of creepy and friendly

    * Do not try to follow every trend because it changes so often i find most times when you have your on style your cool for being you(as cliche' as that sounds its true)

    * Hanging out at the movies and stuff is not babbyish just cuz your in high school

*Do not try and claim a seat on the bus as yours it does not work

    * Do not do weed don't eventry it (burn outs are not cool and are headed down a path of nothingness)

    * do not spend your money on a SAT class just by a book and study study study

    * Most importantly do not turn your nose up at anyone specially not when you become an upper classmen because at one point you were a freshman to.

    Hope i helped

  2. Don't be nervous! I'm going into high school too. With the whole making new friends thing, just be nice to people, but don't just go up to some random person and hug them. Join a club or try-out for sports, a lot of people are in some form of club in my school. With the shyness thing, don't completly shut down if someone starts talking to you, talk to them, because that incorporates with the making friends thing. I'm not really that shy, because I sing and act a lot, so shyness is not an option. But before, I was really shy, and I actually became friends with like all the shy kids in my class. We were shy together. It was a Hallmark moment. Not really, but you get the idea. Oh, and if you keep in touch with your old friends, that may help you too to talk to a familiar face. And I've switched schools before, from here in New York to California and back. It's a long story. Hope this helps, you'll do fine, and break a leg (not really)!

  3. to know people faster- get involved! join a bunch of clubs... if you play a sport, you might want to try out, if you think you're good... that's the fastest way to meet people...

  4. Hahaha, yes indeed. It has been many a year since I've been in Highschool but let me give you some tips. I may be old but I can surely help you out as my son is in his 3rd year in High school.

    1. Don't think of it as changing schools, think of it as meeting new people - be open, honest and glad to be there. Show appreciation to be at that school and the upperclassmen will respect you.

    2. People always tell you there are more fights in High school and it's a dangerous place - that is a lie. Unless you're in downtown los angeles that really won't happen. Just be yourself, chill out it's just people that were in your shoes once.

    3. On the first day expect to see things you don't normally see I mean my son fit in well because we moved states right before he started high school so be thankful you'll have friends from the previous to be with. He; however, didn't have that luxury.

    4. Lunch - usually it is more expensive but it tastes so much better.

    5. Snack/soda machines - let me tell you I loved it. I wouldn't eat lunch because I wouldn't have time so during class changes I'd run by the machines grab some food then go to my next class.

    6. MORE FREEDOM - you get to do so much more, be happy you're not in the other school. High school lets you do oh so much more.

    7. On your first day, it probably is a bigger school get to know it and be happy that you're there. I personally didn't like high school because I hated school all together. But if I liked school I would have loved High school because you had so many choices. Getting to choose your classes, lunches, any thing you can think of.

Good luck on your journey through high school, man! Trust me, it isn't as bad as people say. My son was all scared and infact he told me it was easier than middle school. After the first day you'll figure out what I mean. You'll laugh at yourself for worrying over going to a new school! Best of luck and remember - be yourself and most importanly enjoy high school YOU make the choice and how you want high school to go it goes.

Didn't know you were moving too, so when I said you had that luxury sorry, I guess I should have read it a bit closer. Haha, you're in the same situation my son was in. Don't be afraid you have a BRAND NEW CHANCE to start over. if you had a bad image at your old school change what you did and be the BEST YOU CAN BE HERE. Good luck man

Yeah I'm taking a piece of advice from the person right below me.

    8. Girls - flirt with ones you meet here. I met my wife my freshmen year in high school and she was the one for me. Trust me, find a girl you want then make the move - but don't take a football players girl out for a date. Let me tell you. I only got into one fight in high school. I won but with that victory I got suspended for 2 weeks. and I had to replace the locker 300$ for a locker door what a rip. It's been 20+ years since I was in high school pal. Good luck
