  1. Remember a jump serve used to be called a "spike serve", so treat it like an attach; your just 30 feet from the net instead of about 3.  Throw the ball high enough so you can time it with a full approach (3 step or 4 step, what ever make you comfortable).  also remember to throw it out in front so when you make contact it is slightly out in front, but not to far you can't reach it.  You actually have to hit it a little up, and then snap the wrist, which will cause the top spin to keep it in.  Unless you are 6'5 or bigger and a big jumper, you can't hit down when you jump serve.  Aim for the back third of the court, and hit it.  don't hold back or you will not be able to get the top spin you need.  to jump serve you must be committed.  Just remember, it takes lots of practice, just like when learning to do your overhand serve.  Jump serves are not easy.  they are also only effective if you can do them well and consistently.  i would stick to the "floater' until you are ready.

  2. Don't worry about those that hit the net, it is normal that at the very beginning you serve some into the net.

You want to make sure that you throw the ball with topspin, or down spin (backspin), so that after the contact the ball goes over the net with **topspin**. The topspin will help you with the direction, assuming you have masterd how to contact the ball.

The trick in jump serve might be how high you want to toss the ball, but it is hard to describe without watching you serve... it depends on how high you can jump. Usually you want to toss it almost as high as (or a little lower than) what your setter would have set for you when you are in the front row.

Hope this helps... have a great weekend.

  3. I would recommend practice practice and more practice.  people like jordan larson or sarah pavan didn't get where they are without practice.

  4. ive been taught differently- toss the ball first so that you can see where your toss it so that you can adjust to it. but if you dont want to do that, just keep your toss in front of you. you dont want the ball too high or too low. and you want to toss it in front of your hitting shoulder. try tossing with to hands- i find this much easier. ok so left, toss, right left jump hit. oh and jump off both feet, not just your left. you want to swing your arms as far back as you can, and loosely, like you would for a spike. when you jump throw your arms up as high as you can, spot the ball with your left hand, pull back your right hand, and swing through the ball. swinging your arms gives you a better vertical.

your toss is the most important thing in a jump serve. if you s***w up your toss, you s***w up your serve. so just practice your toss befre you put the steps together and hit it. if you decide to switch and toss first, then toss it high and have it land about 10 feet in front of you. if not, then take your first step, toss the ball not as high, and let it land. the ball should land in front of your hitting shoulder and prob about 7 feet from you. practice your tosses until you can get them down flat. keep tossing til you can get 10 in a row perectly. then 15, then 20 perfect tosses. then add in your approach and hit. it may take a while to get used to, but if you practice hard enough and a lot, it will click eventually and you'll get it right. good luck! hope this helps!
