Tips for memorizing poems..?

I need tips to help me memorize a 16 line poem before friday and recite it to an audience. It may not sound like much to memorize but I'm not very good at memorizing things. I learn one line and then forget it. It never seems to flow when I recite it because I take long awkward pauses between each line to remember the next. How can I memorize this poem faster and actually remember it?

Oh and did I mention its not even in english..?

  1. What language is the poems in? OH!! wait its in GERMAN right LOL!!!

  2. Try this - make flashcards with the number of the line and the first word of the line.  So 1 - Today, 2 - Every, (whatever the words are.)   And on the back write the whole line with the line number.  Start with the whole line, and only 2 or 4 of them.  After awhile, see if you can recite using just the 1st word side of the card.  Once you're pretty good at that, do the same with the next 2 or 4 lines.  (depending on how long they are)  See if you can get to where you have sets of 4 lines memorized using only the first words.  Then you only have to put the 4 sets together.  Good luck!

  3. whenever i try to memorize things i make little songs out of it.

    it may sound stupid but thats what i do & it has always worked for me.

    so just make a song.

    of course also read & read it but also try what i said.

    hope it helps :]

  4. read &&read &&re-read

    split it up into 4sections

    that should help.

  5. If your problem is forgetting, try this. Let's say the first two lines are

    Two households, both alike in dignity

    In fair Verona where we lay our scene.

    Read the lines to yourself like this...

    Two. Two households. Two households both. Two households both alike. Two households both alike in. Two households both alike in dignity. Two households both alike in dignity, in.

    Etc, etc. Just add one word, then start over. It's tedious, but effective. I know that your poem isn't in english, but I imagine that the technique would hold.

    Break a leg!
