  1. Are you using the 2 step or 3 step approach.  Many hitters learn the 3 step when they are outside and continue to use 3 steps when they move to the middle.  People that start in the middle learn the 2 step approach since it is much faster.

Work on your approach without the ball.  Do 10 approaches as fast as you can.  Take 1 minute off.  Do 10 and so on.  Do at least 100 approaches without the ball every day.  More if you can.  You can not think about your feet and watch the ball at the same time.

Get with your setter or setters to see if they can get with you and work outside of the team practice time to work on your timing together.

  2. you didn't say anything about your basic athleticism, but you should have a decent amount of natural speed as well as a good jump height. if you are lacking on any of these things you'll need to work out more.

you also need timing....timing and speed is probably the most important thing.  so work a lot your you agility. make sure your approach is quick and powerful. make sure you got your footwork down for the quicks and slides so in a game all you'll have to worry about is the ball.

also you should have a good relationship with your setter. tell her what you want so you can come to a consensus. if you're setter doesn't give you what you want you'll never get the ball over the net

  3. I play for the JV team too, my steps are left, right, then a quick left step to the net. Keep your left hand up and swing all the way through.
