Tips for picking up an instrument for the first time?

I'm leaning on piano and acoustic guitar. Which one first? If any body has any tips on learning a new instrument please feel free! ( I'm 13 and I have never worked with music )

i personally would have to say learn piano first.

im a guitarist but when i was little (like everyone else) i took piano lessons.

knowing the piano would really help with your guitaring

yes i realise thats not actually a word......

but thats just my opinion

of course you could always learn them at the same time................just a thought.......lol

it will be really tough learning piano or guitar if you have never had experience with music before

but just dont give up every time you make a mistake or youll regret it

ive given up on piano

i hardly ever play my saxaphone anymore

i dont bother with my drum kit coz its too loud and you know ppl are gonna get annoyed

but if you just keep trying you could end up being much better than you ever thought you could

so just keep trying, practice until your fingers bleed, and when you fall, just get right back up again

coz music is the most amazing thing in the world and to be able to entertain ppl with your talent is the most amazing feeling in the world

of course its not for me though

i get terrified when i have to perform............lol

I played the flute when I was in middle school and all it takes is a good instructor and your willingness to learn. It'll be fun since it's something totally new. Plus playing an instrument makes us smarter! I suggest going with the instrument that you like the best. Good luck and have lots of fun!

You will learn more if you take the piano, but you can't take a piano over to your friends house once you learn and are ready to show off.  The guitar is easy to learn and easy to take with you when you go visiting.  You will probably encounter more people that play a guitar than you would people who play the piano.  To learn the piano you will have to basically learn how to read music, learning the guitar you don't.  The choice is yours.  Good luck and have fun.  And remember, practice, practice, practice.  That's the key to being a good musician.

TG, you learn that piano first.  Trust me, once you learn the piano, if you do it right, all other stringed instruments (and I really mean those played with the hands rather than a bow) will come easy to you. Playing a piano proficiently necessarily entails learning a lot of theory and the use of chords and chord progressions.  After you learn that stuff, the guitar family of instruments will be just a matter of learning hand positions, finger formations for your chords, dexterity, and speed, and all of that is mechanical, and will be much easier to learn without all the theory in the way.

get yourself a beginer book and work your way through it, one that will teach you the basics of music/musical notation as it teaches you the instrument.  a teacher would be a great help, too.

i'd suggest starting with piano, because not having any background with music, it's laid out in a more understandable manner, i would think. theres a reason that's what kids usually start on! it's easier to see and understand stuff like half/whole steps and whatnot on a piano than a guitar, and a background in piano will help you move on to guitar (or any other instrument!)

but good luck with whichever you choose! take it slow and don't get discouraged if you're not as good as you'd like at first :P just have fun!
