I recently was given a Kawasaki Ninja ZX10 (998cc) as a gift brand new. I’ve never rode before but I have taken the MSF class and passed it along with getting my license.

I know this is a powerful and dangerous bike, especially for a beginner. Aside from selling the bike and getting a smaller one, what do you suggest I do?

Any tips or suggestions the steps i should take when learning to ride with this bike?

I just want to know some common mistakes people make with sports bikes that would take them down / crash.

Any help from some pros?

  1. Where do you live ?

If its the UK then go to Kieth Codes Sperbike School at Brands Hatch.

In the mean time, sell the ZX10 and get a smaller cc bike to learn on. The ZX is monster of an engine.

Try something like a cb500 or and sv 650.

  2. selling it and getting a 600 would be best for a beginner, plus you'll have money left over to buy a jacket and helmet or something else if you already have those.  Besides that, just respect the bikes power. It's sooo easy to speed and pass cars. But when you get too comfortable on your bike is when you get lazy and make mistakes.  Just take your time learning and don't take passengers till you've got plenty of miles behind you cause someone on the back really makes a differences in handling.

  3. Keep the bike, learn on something smaller. we all make mistakes, some things are just plain stupid. like too slow into a corner(yes Too slow, i did say stupid mistakes) then there is things like forgetting to load the front before opening the corner, these things come as you get used to going quicker. but you will have "MISTAKES"

the trick is not to have an accident you cant walk away from.

take lessons, ride slowly until you know what the bike is going to do. THEN........... Have Fun

  4. NO WAY - you can't sell a gift. As Mr Proc says, keep the bike but get something less powerful to start off with.

    Some common mistakes made :-

    Limited experience !

Thinking your on a race track !!

    Trying to be clever !!!

Rating yourself better than Nori Haga !!!!

Lack of respect for the machine's abilities !!!!!

Not holding on tight enough !!!!!!

    IGNORING GOOD ADVICE !!!!!!!
