Tips for sleeping on a red eye.?

I'm taking an 8 hour bus ride (followed by a 2 hour commuter) to get home for Thanksgiving. You're welcome, mom. Any tips, on how I can get some shut eye and not be cranky for 6 hours of family time?

  1. What I usually do is stay up most of the night before, that way I sleep very well on the ride / trip and it goes by sooo fast!

  2. Take a small pillow or a sweater to use as a pillow and sit next to  the window so you can lean on the window to sleep. Do not sit next to a male, (change seats if one sits next to you)  Bring a few lolipops to offer to the kid kicking your seat behind you. If necessary take one(1) tylenol pm to help you sleep on the way home. Good Luck.

  3. have a few beers in the airport bar and have one or two more real quick when the food service comes and it will knock you out. do it all the time.

  4. I take it you're taking a nighttime bus trip.  First, a good cup of chamomile tea before you start (or taking a thermos of it along with you) will help you get to sleep.  (Be sure to take that potty break at the station just before boarding the bus and, while you want to be somewhat near the restroom on the bus, do not sit across from or directly next to it.) Take along the type of earplugs you would take for a rock concert - and use them.  Alternatively, if you are taking along an ipod, you could load it with soothing or light classical music and use that instead of the earplugs.  Also a sleep mask, if it's something you're accustomed to using and won't be a distraction.  Definitely take along a cushion to sit on because not all buses have seats with enough stuffing - and take a neck pillow so you have some neck support and will be more comfortable.  Be sure to take along a sweater because bus temperatures can vary greatly.  Pick a seat that will recline somewhat or, if the bus is not packed, opt for the back "bench" seat or a window seat that has an empty next to it so you can stretch out some.  Some drivers will not give you a hassle if you let your legs hang into the aisles - particularly if you are near the rear of the bus.  Do NOT Sit Over A Wheel; you will feel every bump in the road regardless of how good the bus's suspension may be.  Have a Happy Thanksgiving visit!

  5. Make sure you have something to put over yourself so you can stay warm.  It's near impossible to sleep if you're cold.  Eat a meal with plenty of carbs before you get on the bus, the carbs will help make you sleepy.
