Tips for sprucing up a 2004 Ion?

I'm the first to admit I know very little about cars. I couldn't tell you off hand how much horsepower my car is putting out, or even what that number would mean. What I'm looking for is some suggestions to spice up my car's performance - not hints on becoming a ricer.

What are some cost-effective upgrades or add-ons that can improve the quality of my car's ride or fuel economy?

Small things you can do might be change your air intake, K&N offers pretty decently priced filters and systems that boost gas mileage and give you more hp.  Changing the header isn't so cheap but it will boost performance.  Lastly your exhaust system could be changed to give your car a bit of a growl.  It's all out there, check sportcompactonly.com, they have a shop by car feature.
