  1. you should work out and do a lot of stuff with  with your arms and legs because those are what are pulling you. practice floating and kicking your legs.

  2. First, you should never drink soda pop.  The carbonation is the least of your concerns ... the sugar is the big concern.  Drink just plain old water.

Next ... You must learn how to move your arms and legs (called stroke mechanics) before you should be doing hard workouts.  Without proper stroke mechanics, you'll never be able to swim efficiently nor will you ever be fast.

The high school team I coach, after they learn good strokes, will swim up to 9,000 yards (25 yds per length times 360 lengths) per day.  But, that is only for the top swimmers.  The beginning swimmers will swim, by the end of the hard part of the season, up to 4000 yards per day.  But, those kids, by then, are ready to do so.  At the beginning of the season, they swim 1000 to 2000 yards per day while learning their strokes.

  3. I'm a swimmer, and I class myself as well above average ability and I swim for a club and compete in competitions. The best thing to do is see what is right for you. Take it easy, try going slower and trying to get a good technique. Then build up the pace and try longer/harder swims. Any other questions, feel free to ask.
