Question:

Tips for transplanting a balsam fir. ?

I tried transplanting a balsam fir from my land in the norther part of the state, to my yard 4 hours south. I found a nice sapling in the woods in a mulchy environment so it was closer to the dirt I have at home (the alternative was sandy dirt which is not what I have at home). I dug up the root ball and placed it in a plastic garbage bag with water and took it home 4 hours away. When I got home I dug a hole, watered the hole, placed lots of mulch from the original location inside, put in the root ball, and back filled the hole followed up with a good dose of water. After that, I watered it every four or five days if it didn't rain. Problem is after a month all the needles are turning brown and falling off. It's not looking good. Did I do something wrong? If I were to try again with another sapling, what should I do different?
