  1. If you want something adventurous and extraordinary, just go there.  Don't plan on going to the touristy places you hear about all the time.  Just rent a car, get in it, and go.  I highly recommend the west coast.  We went last June with very vague plans in mind and found so many amazing things.  The place I was absolutely fascinated with was the Poulawack Cairn...a very ancient Cairn in the middle of the Burren.  It's off the beaten track and the tourist buses can't access it.  You climb up a hill covered with limestone and then tromp another 100 yards or more before you get to it.  We felt like we were at the edge of civilzation.  You couldn't see anything resembling modern technology from the Cairn.

My best insider tip is this: if you're going to rent a car, get the smallest one you can.  If you're not used to narrow roads, with no shoulders, hedge rows on one or both sides (and sometimes a drop down on the other) and roads that seem like they should be one way, yet aren't, you'll want something tiny so you feel more comfortable.  We rented a Nissan Micra and it felt roomy on the inside, but was quite tiny.  It even had outside mirrors that folded in so if you were in someplace really narrow, you could fold them in to fit.  Great car for the place!

  2. Go see Charleville Castle in Tullamore, County Offaly.  You can go to the website and read more about it. http://www.charlevillecastle.com  also go through some of the smaller towns like Kilkisheen near Shannon,  St Bridgets Well in the Burren.  Craggenouwen down near Shannon.  I go to Ireland every year and always find something different.   Visit some of the Aran Irelands.  Its really open to what you want when you get there.  The B&Bs are very reasonable and you get a full Irish breakfast included in your stay in hotels too.

A full Irish Breakfast is fried eggs, beans, black and white pudding,  blood sausage, bacon, tomatoes and mushrooms and a choice of breads
