Tips for walking in the evening when it's dark and cold outside?

I really enjoy walking especially in spring and summer but now fall is approaching and the nights are drawing in, what are some great tips on walking in the evening? It's a very safe neighborhood where i live and I stay close to home. I also take a flashlight out with me. Anymore advice?

  1. get a rape alarm

    or a treadmill

  2. Why not walk with a friend? Or if you decide to walk by yourself, you may want to attach a can of mase: wear a belt clip.

  3. you could bring a dog and if you dont have one you could offer to walk someone else's for money. so you'd be killing two birds with one stone! but yeah, deffinetly don't walk alone!

  4. i would take some sort of alarm, or mobile phone, to be on the safe side.

  5. Sounds like you got it all figured out, be safe (:

  6. Don't use an MP3 player or a walkman or anything in case someone jumps you from behind. Maybe encourage a friend or neighbour to get fit with you?

  7. Carry a cell phone and pepper spray.

    Walk with a friend.

Vary the times you walk at night, never leaving or arriving at the same time.

Walk early morning, or at lunch time if you work.

Stay warm! Most body heat is lost through the extremities, so cover your head, hands and feet.

  8. I walk at night, but I take the neighbours 2 alsatians and my Staffie with me!

I'd recommend you take some sort of personal attack alarm, on eBay you can find a decent one for under £5.

I must admit, I do have one on my keys - just in case.

You could try walking in the morning, the air is usually fresher and there is more of a breeze which I like.

You sound pretty clued up on safety, the only thing I'd suggest is letting someone know you are going and telling them when you should return, take a mobile with you. Don't go through any wood/forest type areas alone - no matter how safe your neighbourhood is.

    Have fun + stay safe.

  9. My sister uses bars and waits in the evening rather than walking the streets. She says it's a much more comfortable away to pick up johns. Why is this in diet and fitness? She adds "always get the cash up front".

  10. Keep where you can be seen.  Don't talk to single people. If you feel uncomfortable (following footsteps etc) cross over the road or turn around and walk back the same way).  Wear light coloured or reflective clothing.  Let someone know where you are and when you should be returning.

  11. Don't listen to music, you won't hear people approaching you. Walk with someone else if possible.

  12. Do you have any friends you could go for your walks with? It doesn't sound like a good idea going out on your own, even if you feel it's a safe neighbourhood. Alternatively, perhaps you need to try going at different times of day in the winter.

  13. 1) Walk or jog with a friend

    2) Wear White or bright clothing.

    3) Bring something to drink

    4) Go at dusk where its not totally dark.

    5) Wear something suitable to the temperature I mean fall can be warm and cold so dress appropiately,

  14. Simply keep your head up, be observant, and enjoy it.

If you are worried about such things as robbery rape etc. (though you said it is a safe neighbourhood and thus these should not be a problem) then you could take a personal attack alarm. These should be available online or sometimes even in sporting goods stores. You could also take mace if you are really worried but you should not need either of those things and they are not necessary unless you take a detour through a place deemed a danger area.

  15. Don't go out alone - go with a friend. No neighbourhood is 100% safe. Also try to go out in the early evening, so it's nearly light, & you're not out for the whole walk in total darkness. and yes, a mobile phone & torch would be sensible too.

  16. Diet rules-

  17. Be sure to carry your cell and maybe pepper spray. Also see if a friend or family member will join you. If that does not happen, make sure you check in with a friend before you walk, and when you et home. You can never be too safe.
