Question:

Tips on cleaning a mattress

Basically, I've got this mattress a dog slept on for awhile. Not alone, accompanied by someone. Anyway, they didn't use sheets and now the whole thing smells like dog. I've tried water/soap and "febreze" but neither helped. Carpet cleaner also. They all seemed to cover the smell up for a day or so but had no lasting result. Someone mentioned putting it in the sun, though I'm not sure how that'd help? I also read on a similar thread about a full enclosure mattress cover of sorts, though I'd rather not resort to that. It's a full size mattress, "featther top" though it's just foam.

  1. Sprinkle baking soda all over and rub it in.  Then let it sit for at least 30 minutes (or longer if you can).  Come back and vacuum it and hopefully you'll be one step closer to a minty fresh mattress.

  2. Go to you're local grocery store and rent a rug doctor, get the upholstery attachment(extra) use reg  upholstery or carpet cleaner, put in a little bleach to you're cleaning mixture, it will turn out great( oh yeah, vacuum before you clean it) until you get the dirt actually out of the mattress, it will always smell.

  3. MMMMM....Maybe try an enzyme spray like natures miracle or something of that nature... Zorbex works like a "febreze" type product but, better.... You can always sprinkle the mattress with baking soda and leave it on overnight... Vacuum with a wet/dry shopvac the next day....

You also might want to spray and vacuum BOTH sides of the mattress as well.... OR Take the mattress outside weather permitting of course and let it air out in the sun.... The sun has a natural bleaching affect and the nice breeze would probably do the mattress some good as wel!

If all else fails you can get  a nice pillow-top, waterproof/washable mattress cover and use that as a barrier between you/mattress... We have a Queen size mattress and ours was around $40!  Our mattress, looks, and smells like new.. It's almost 7 yrs. old....!

answer= if it is very dirty, try vacum it first, then dilute warm water and javex, and you have to do this many times though, and it has to be aired, near an open window,or on a balcony, then after you can cover it with a thick mattress cover.

hope it works, good luck, all the best, take care.

  5. You could try spraying it down with a solution of 1 part water, 1 part white vinegar and letting it sit outside to dry.  (The whole thing with the sun is it's a natural way to bleach things, but in this case, you're drying the mattress quickly to avoid mildew or musty smells.)  Haul the mattress outside, onto a tarp or something and spray it down.  I would use quite a bit...you don't want it to the point of being completely water logged, but a light mist might not get down into the foam as well.  Let it sit outside until it's completely dry.  Vinegar is a mild acid, and is good for breaking down pet odors.  If this doesn't work, I would go to a pet store, like Pet Smart, and purchase a special cleaner made to remove pet odors.  (They will recommend one if you ask.)  The thing about pet odors is the protein from urine that's so hard to get rid of.  But they do make special cleaners that are made to break it down.  Good luck!

  6. Sprinkle the entire mattress with baking soda and let it sit on there for 24 hours then vacuum.  This should eliminate most if not all of the smell.  Good luck!
