I want to do primary teaching after my leaving, I know it's 455 points and ou have to get a C3 in HL Irish. Any other tips? etc. Are there any other subjects I have to do... These are the subjects I'm doing for the Leaving: English, Irish, Maths, French, Geography, Home Ec and Biology... I can't do art because I never did it and I hate it! lol

Thanks.

  1. Irish is really the only one you need to be worried about, your subjects sound fine, you will cover art, music etc. when you are in college, focus on getting the points.

Plus you don't need any teaching experience to get the degree, just the points.

  2. hi you

if you do go down the road of teaching make L.U.C  your first collage it is the main one for teacher in ireland

  3. All the experience in the world might get you a job but the reality is that jobs are scarce, you will need to learn the word nepotism as its rife in the education sector in ireland, I was a secondary school teacher and my wife is a primary school teacher so trust me its all about who you know and who will do you a favour, ie if you are a friend or relative of the parish priest.

Secondary school teaching is the same but in dublin it is probably a lot more of a fair interview, there is nothing worse than having to do an interview for a job you know is already gone

  4. To become a Primary School teaching experience is the key.  Yes you have to have a good subject knowledge but a good rapport with children is vital or else you'll hate your job.

Art will also be a big part of the job.  You'll have to change the art work in the class with every new topic you cover.  All primary school topics interconnect so even if you have are teaching french it will probably involve some degree of art especially if you are teaching key stage 1 children (5-8 year olds).

Be prepared to sing dance and generally do things you may find embarrassing, because not only will you have to do this in college infront of your peers and professors but in front of your class everyday after you qualify.

I would strongly disagree that experience is not necessary.  If you get a couple of weeks work experience working in a primary school it will not only stand to you in the application process but you'll also find out whether the jobs for you or not.  Some people hate the experience but it's much better to find out before you commit yourself.
