Question:

Tips on driving?

I'm 15 and I'm trying to get better at driving.

So far, I can hit it straight. I can consistently drive it 150 yards and make it roll past 200 yards.

Is there anything I can do to drive further. Possibly over 200 consistently?

  1. I'm also 15. I've been playing for about a year and a half. The best thing for you at this point is probably to take video lessons from a teaching pro then go to a pro that maybe doesn't use video alot.  Thats what i did and i drive 280 to 300 now. I don't take them anymore though. Also working out can  help tremendously as long as you can keep your flexibility. Something im pretty sure that could help you is to keep your lag in the downswing as long as possible. Also, avoid too much hip turn in the backswing. Use more shoulder turn. But make sure you start your downswing with your hips turning as fast as possible with your shoulders following.

  2. You are still young. Distance will come by just playing more. How much only you will know. You have to play the game within yourself. You may end up being a monster driver depending on practice, teaching and technique. You may end up with 220 yard range. A unique story, but a true one that does relate to your question.  Before I moved to a different State, I use to play with a friend who is a scratch level player and did not even carry a driver in his bag. He took lessens, even went to a golf school for a month, but could not drive a golf ball. He settled for a 4 iron off the tee and could hit it straight around 220 yds. Around the green, he was deadly. He would chip in, make 30-40 foot putts consistently. If his sand shots didn't go in, he left them inches from the hole.  He humbled many good players and long hitters including me. I guess what I am trying to say is find the strong points of your game and take full advantage of them by practicing. You will suprise yourself in 5-10 years to see what a good player you have turned out to be.

  3. Go take a lesson. a pro will help you there. Just try hitting in the sweet spot (center of the club)

  4. Driving:

Keep your eye on the ball.

    Don't move your head.

Make sure your stance is shoulder width or less, the smaller the club, the narrower the space between your feet.

Take a practice swing to see where the club hits on the down swing, then put your ball at that spot.

Don't hold the club too tight, the club does all the work, not you or your muscles, your job is to bring the club to the ball.

  5. Hit the ball in the center of the club.

  6. Work on creating more lag in your swing.

Do a search on youtube on lag in a golf swing. You will find drills and examples of what it is.

This months golf digest has a good article on what the proper swing path will do for distance and accuracy. You can probably find it online also.

  7. It's very important to have a driver that is designed specifically for you. i.e. shaft weight, clubhead, and high moment of inertia.  This being said, I recommend that you go to your local golf store and get fitted for a new driver.

If you do not have money for a new driver, I would go get a few lessons.  You're only 15 years old, and since you're starting young, lessons are a must.

I got my driver fitted at golf galaxy.  I have a TaylorMade Burner TP 8.5 with a Grafalloy Epic 68 stiff.  I hit it about 305 on average, and that's about 25 yards longer than before.

Good luck, golf is the best sport in the world!

  8. Well there are a million different ways to hit a driver just watch the pro's.  Most hit very similar to one another and others have weird swings.  What I'm trying to say is, be like the majority of golfers and hit it the BEN HOGAN style.  A circular motion around shoulders with the club on the backswing between the back of your head and the shoulders slightly pass paralell while leaving your left arm straight.  The main thing in hitting distance balls is to keep left arm straight as possible so that you can get good extension on the downswing which creates club head speed.  Now timing has to happen to hit it straight and this comes with practice.  Another key point is to release your wrists and clear your hips at impact (finish with your hips perpendicular to the hole) to get your body weight into the shot "this takes pratice.  I am considered a long ball hitter 300+ yards are common.  Good luck I promise you'll hit them longer with these tips.
