i really will need a taxi right when i get off of the plane and i dont want to be ripped off as a tourist, especially since im traveling so far away..if anyone has any suggestions who has been to puerto rico or knows of the prices taxis or tours go and how much they charge, that would help..im basically wanting to get to hormigueros as fast as possible from san juan, no sightseeing as im going to a conference and so i need a reliable taxi service that is available from the airport and wont overcharge me because its about 115 miles away. ive heard renting by the hour might work but im not sure if they will go that far away or does it matter? if anyone has traveled to hormigueros from san juan and knows any info please id like to know!!! thankyou

  1. big huge advice: when u get off the plane, go directly were it says ground transportation and ask the security guards were is the taxi tourism informatin booth. then in that information booth u will ask them how much its the taxi ride and they wont rip u off(stay with the copy, until its time to pay, dont pay before the service). NOW, pay close attention, the taxi driver is going to try to rip u off by saying the tip its way higher than the taxi rate and make up stories about how mandatory its to pay another extra wage. NO, u pay the taxi what u think its a personal resonable tip, NOT what he is asking u for. the reason PR has done this taxi tourism tickets its because tourists were getting ripped off by local taxis, and try to avoid local taxis from different cities, because they can ask for whatever they want. rent a car or take public bus transportation. its pretty far from san juan from lares, its going to be more than 200 bucks! I highly recommend u rent a car, its believe it or not its going to be cheaper.

  2. It will be  cheaper to rent a car for your  stay  unless you know somebody that know  somebody that could  take you there..

  3. It will cost alot of money to get a taxi to take you that far. If you can negotiate a good price. Or find a publico (public car) in San Juan that is going that way. Otherwise I'd say rent a car in San Juan & drop it off in Mayaguez which is close to Hormigueros. Mayaguez has alot of the car rental places that San Juan has like Thrifty, Hertz & Avis. (Thrifty is probably cheapest) Rent it for 1 day & drop it off in Mayaguez then catch a taxi or Publico to Hormigueros. It will be cheaper.

  4. It depends on what are you getting here. During daylight you can take a taxi to get you to one the 'guaguitas' (Bus shuttles)stops. It will take you to Mayaguez or somewhere close to Hormiguero, for not too much.

  5. Is renting a car an option at all? It will be better, price wise and less hassle.  Now a days you can go to priceline and get a car for almost nothing specially if you compare with taxi rates.

  6. Depending on which airline you are traveling with you may be able to fly into the airport at Aguadilla on the west coast. Hormigueros is a quiet little town on the southern west coast. From Aguadilla to Hormigueros is about 30 to 40 minutes by car, going south. Since gas prices are so high I`m sure Taxi rates have gone up. You could ask at the Travelers information center at the airport or rent a car in either San Juan airport or Aguadilla airport. If you choose to rent a car you will need a map to help get you around and the roads from either airport to Hormigueros will be route#2, a very good highway. Secure your valuebles and travel in groups to avoid problems. I`m sure you will do fine but I believe in staying safe, take care and enjoy the island and the hospitality of its people. Good luck and God bless.

  7. You need to negotiate the price BEFORE you get to Puerto Rico or, as a second option... go to a hotel when you get to P.R. and then have the Consierge make the arrangements for you if you don't speak Spanish.

Not only will it save you money, the taxi company will furnish a taxi and driver WHO KNOWS THE DISTRICT.  Just because they drive a Taxi in San Juan doesn't mean they know the countryside.

Use any of the Puerto Rico official web sites to make connections with a taxi company.

  8. The best it is to rent a car and make a stop at a gas station to buy a road map for more or less $3 USD. with a road map you can plan your way to hormigueros. I suggest you to take the high way going to caguas and then continue your travel to Ponce direction and from there find hormigueros in the map and sketch on the map the rest of your trip. This is in my opinion the cheaper, shorter, easier and fun way to get there.

Rent the car for the time of your stancy in Puerto Rico. without a car you will not enjoy been there because people in Puerto Rico are americans in their way of living and they are independent. I do not think they will loan you a car.
