Question:

Tips on hitting balls out of hard sand bunkers.?

As it rained recently, I was wondering what the bunkers will be like tomorrow or the weekend. Usually they are quite firm at local courses I play after a rain. So how do you suggest getting out of them?

I carry a 54* and a 60* both with medium bounce.

  1. Swing lighter because the sand will act less like sand and more like mud, also address the ball closer to the ball so you get more of the ball and the club doesn't plug in the ground.

  2. open your stance and dig in until your comfortalbe, choke up on the club to compensate for digging in, open the face and swing.  be sure to acelerate through, i try to remember that by if i'm in a sand trap, i get mad so i swing harder, whatever helps tho

  3. get a sand wedge and hit the ball but use ur wrist to hit the ball but also ur arms

  4. dig the sand

  5. Rain or even irrigation will firm the sand in bunkers. This will have a tendancy to compact the sand so that it is much more difficult to use the explosion technique to extract the ball.Since the ball will be on the surface of the sand, open the face of the sand wedge and "skim" it underneath the ball, taking with it as little sand as possible. The ball will come out with extra spin. You will also have to swing harder if you want the ball to travel further.

  6. The sand shot is the easiest shot in the game, once you know how to pull it off.   The main things you need to do in order to hit a great sand shot are:

    1.  Make sure you are lined up with your feet open to your target.  this means if you are right handed, your feet point to the left of your target.

    2.  You need to open the blade of your wedge.  This lets you get that high soft shot you see on tour.

    3.  You need to c**k you wrists during the swing.  This is probably the single most important part.  You need to make a severe wrist c**k to put spin on the ball.

    4.  Accelerate through the shot.

If you do all these things, you will become a master at the sand shot.

  7. A foot wedge is always an option.

  8. first of all ill say try an avoid them...but if you cant play it like it is in a divot, stay away from such high loft and try a 9 iron maybe even a wedge.
