  1. The new 360's should not have the problem after it became such an epidemic.  Originally it was caused by shoddy soldering used on the circuit board's contacts.  When the system would start to heat up beyond a point it would melt and begin to interfere with the system's performance.  After Microsoft lost loads of money from replacing systems, they began using a higher quality material.  Best thing you can do is to keep the console well ventilated, so do not put it into a tiny cabinet or enclosed space of an entertainment center where it cannot properly disperse the heat it releases during use.  Also, there are now a number of third party companies which make fans that will clip on the the back of the console and create a greater air-flow to cool down the internals.  Make sure you shop around before buying one though, most of the ones that I have seen tend to be cheap and the fans make a very annoying whirring sound while in operation.  They are still effective, but can be obnoxious after a time.
