I have an 8 week old holland lop doe. I filled her litter box with *safe* litter an inch deep, put it in her cage, and put some of her "marbles" in it so that she would smell it and want to "go" in there. however, she still won't use it! how long do rabbits usually take to begin using their box? also, do you have any tips? thanks ;]

  1. Also go to house rabbits.com they have excellant help and support with other owners.

  2. I would put the box where she goes the most in the cage, then I would see if she uses it, if she still doesn't put more of her droppings into it, so she see's thats where she's supposed to go. I would also pick her up, adn put her into the box every time you see her about to go, or going, and if she's still not going in there after a week or so, Put some carrots, and oter assorted veggies{Not iceberg lettuce, or too much of any lettuce for thaqat matter} in her box, and now she'll be forced to sit in the box and eat, she'll probably go in there.

Every time you see her go to her litter box and "Go" Give her a bunny treat, or something she doesn't usually get, like a small piece of a strawberry, or a "Rabbit Treat"

Or something like that. She'll get the hang of it.

I'm guessing it's going to take her a week or two to figure it out.

Also, don't change the litter till she goes about 5 times, for the first couple of days, after she starts going in there regularily change it, every other day or every two days.

  3. you have to put her litter box in the spot of the cage she goes in, and also what kind of litter did you use some rabbits don't like certain kinds of litter.

Try putting news paper in the mix that worked with my sisters bunny, it took him about a week to get the hang of it.

I had to keep putting his marbles in the litter box every time I saw that he had went, so he would know that they went in the box..

Rabbits are very clean animals and it wont take her long to get the idea.

  4. Put a layer of hay in the box over the litter.  Rabbits like to eat and poo simultaneously.  They will not eat the hay they pee on, they are very picky, so don't worry about that.  It will help a lot, and she will get habitutated to using it.  The other thing that will help is to observe where she likes to 'go' and put the box there- rabbits, once she gets settled in, usually pick a single corner.  Put the box there, and if it is not a spot that is convenient for you, once she is using the box well, move it slowly (like a quarter inch a day) over to where you want it.

Keep at it and she'll get the point, make sure you clean up any messes outside the box right away and put them into the box.

  5. First, bunnies are attracted easiest by their pee not p**p.  I trained my bunny by getting a plastic tray, lining it with newspaper then towel paper, covered by plastic mesh.  I let my bunny pee where ever he wanted then I picked up his pee with paper towel.  At first he had like 3 main places he liked to pee so I put down paper with his pee on top in all three places.  Once he realized to go on the paper I took away 2 of them so I was only left with one wee wee area.  I made his wee wee pad up myself because my bunnies paws would touch his pee and then he would spread it around the house so putting a covering on the pad allowed him to pee into the paper but not actually touch it since he was on top of the plastic mesh.  Also, the wee wee area should not be in the bunnies cage as they are very clean and dont like to have that stuff around them., they also have sensitive noses so they dont like the smell of urine. Hope this answers your question, please email if you have anymore.
