Tips on painting wood furniture black?

I have a headboard that is direct from the store. So it's probably been stained and varnished or whatever it is they do. Basically, it's got stuff on it. So what all do I need to do to paint it black?

I was thinking just sanding it down with fine grain sandpaper, and then painting it.

But apparently I'm reading that it might not be that easy. Do I have to prime it? Do I have to varnish it? Do I have to do anything extra to it?

if it is a new piece of wood furniture then you would need to prime it, if it already has paint on it you can just paint over it, make sure the surface is clean, use a mild cleaner to get your surface ready. one thing that really looks good is use a high gloss black paint it adds a real nice touch to the wood. i have a dresser i repainted in high gloss black it seems to disappear because i have black curtains behind it. in a small apt. the illusion of space is important.-blurey

here's the basic technique.  It will work equally well for a headboard.  I prefer oil-based paint, too, as it cures harder, stuff does not stick to it, and levels ("flows out") better.

Most likely, what is on there is a lacquer finish, unless it's a plastic film, in which case, forget painting it.

You need to sand it first. You can not paint over varnish. Use an oil base primer then an oil base paint. You can also use shellac for a base coat instead of  primer and paint over just like you would a primer. Oil base paint adheres better and is more durable then latex paint.

No you do not varnish unless you are staining the wood to keep its wood look.  If you are painting this black a light sanding would help the paint stick.  Pick a good latex paint and decide if you want flat or glossy.  Then paint let it dry for a day or two and enjoy.  Latex will clean up with soap and water vs paint thinner.
