  1. Take a train or a coach.

  2. air the tires up and use cruse

  3. slowing down 10 mph will add 4 mpg, use a scangauge to check it..found on ebay and amazon..

one alternate I use for long trips is to rent a economical car, it can save enough to pay for the rent and at the same time impress the girl with a new car..

  4. Maintain a constant speed, cruise control is good unless you are constantly going up and down hills.

Slow down if practical. My van gets 21mpg at 75mph but gets about 24mpg at 60mph. I drive a lot on the freeway so going slow doesn't impede traffic, they can easily pass. If you are on a 2 lane highway you should probably drive at the limit.

Any alternate means to get there? Greyhound bus, amtrack, anything? I realize that this leaves you there without a car to take her places but perhaps she will drive if you buy the gas.

Shop around for gas. Depending on the range of your car, you may not have to buy gas on the road but if you do, dont go to the first station right off the freeway, they are almost always higher than the little station in town where the locals get their gas.

Can you borrow someone elses car that gets better mileage?

  5. do not use your cruise control because it uses allot of gas and stay right at the speed limit good luck the reason you do not want to use cruise is because in cruise your engine is constantly reving up and slowing down burning allot of gas in the process
