OK, I have never been on a swim team, and I am seriously considering joining our girls swim team at my high school. I have a swim class that is required for graduation now, and I am not that bad. I don't really have access to a pool until August when practice would start, and I am not in good enough shape to be able to do what we would do every practice. I plan on running everyday and working my core muscles, will that help get me ready? Also, what else will help get me ready that I could do without a pool?

  1. Working your core muscles will help as long as just about any muscle conditioning. Weightlifting and other exercises involving weights will most likely pay off during the off-season.

As for dryland exercising squat thrusts are an essential for any dryland exercise. For these you stand up normally, then squat down like a catcher in a baseball game and then kick your legs out in the pushup position, then back in to the catcher's stance and then you jump up as high as you can. Start out with 3 sets of 10 and then work your away to 4 sets of 8 and any other number which can be divided which will increase the number that you do (always do at least 20 but probably no more than 100, at that point you'll probably start developing blood circulation issues no matter how many squat trusts you've done before.

  2. Ok, first off, the best way to be ready for swim season is to stretch and get into shape. If your body is limber and in shape, you won't be as tired during practice. Run lond distance, not short sprints because in swim practice, it is usually lond distance and you need endurance.

So build up your endurance and flexibility

  4. i have been swimming for 9 years, and youre smart to do dryland to help you get in shape.

our coach is from auburn, and they are known for really good swimmers. he works the c**p out of us with dryland.

work your legs, arms and abs. & run.

the stronger your arms are, the more you will be able to pull yourself in the water without getting as tired. work your legs just as much. if you have strong legs, you will go much faster. and having a strong stomach will help.

stretch when you can. get your muscles loose.

trust me, it is not fun to have to swim with tight muscles and joints.

talk to a swim coach and ask them for more tips.

    hope i have helped.

& have fun, i know people who get pushed to their limit in swimming and burn out. make sure to have fun.
