Question:

Tips to raise my vocal range please!?

I am by definition an alto, but compared to all my friends, I'm more like an alto/mezzo. I would like to get bigger leads but most of them are sopranos. Does anyone have any tips for me to raise my vocal range up to a soprano? I don't own a piano though so that might be a problem.

  1. Well please understand that you'll probably only raise your range by an octave or two, you're an alto for a reason, and trying to become a full-fledged soprano is almost impossible.

However if you do a Google search for major scales, there should be a site that plays them for you, and just sing along, and get higher in octave.

  2. Sing a constant high note as long as you can, stop when you cant go any longer take SHORT break (10 seconds), rinse wash repeat a few times a  day

  3. Oh my god, please do NOT try to expand your range just by forcing out higher and higher scales. You'll wreck your poor voice that way.

Before you worry about your range, your first goal is to sing with proper technique in the range you comfortably have already. This means proper posture, breathing, vowel placement, and diction. You might be able to get some very basic direction in this by singing in an ensemble with a good director, but there's really no substitute for a good private teacher; seek one out if you can. If/when you get to a place where you can sing in the register you already have with a really solid and well-taught technique, you'll likely find that your upper register expands naturally as you come to understand how your instrument works.

Remember, any old loser can scream out a high note. You may be able to get out some note that's out of your range by forcing it through various scales and such, but if you can't do it with a QUALITY sound, and you don't understand just what's going on in your ear/nose/throat to enable such a high note, you're doing yourself avsolutely no favors and you may as well not be singing it at all, PLUS you'll be hurting your instrument to boot.

And finally, don't equate singing well with being able hit high notes. At the end of the day, an alto is an alto is an alto. It doesn't mean you're a bad singer, it's just a matter of how your organs in your throat are shaped. I know it's frustrating because the female leads of most shows in musical theater are soprano roles, but it's better to be a great alto than a shoddy soprano. Focus on what you can do, and do it well, so that when a great alto role comes along (why hello there, Fantine!), all the sopranos can wish they had your earthy alto range.

  4. you should do scales and go confidently (find a place you can sing and don't care who hears) past where you normally sing even if your voice cracks but don't do it if it hurts

make sure you work back down after you go up high

keep doing this for a while and your chords will say "oh! okay now we're gonna sing high" and get used to the notes and should increase your range

the best thing to do is practice, even if it's 10 minutes of scales a day

this is a basic suggestion but works

take voice lessons from a pro if you can, they are amazing

buy a pitch pipe at your local music store to sub for a piano if you want
