Question:

Titanium wedding ring?

My boyfriend and I have been looking at engagement/wedding rings and we're debating about what kind of metal to use for the ring. I've heard platinum is incredibly soft so it scratches, loses its shine, and the prongs don't hold the stones too well. I've heard white gold yellows and frequently needs re-dipping. I'm thinking about titanium. Any comments? Are there and down sides to titanium? How does it compare to white gold or platinum as far as price, durability, looks, shine, and scratch-wear go?

Thanks so much!

  1. titanium IS next level!

  2. Titanium is a very hard metal. This has both advantages and disadvantages. It will hold up to everyday wear extremely well compared to other metals. However, it's nearly impossible to resize later on, should you gain or lose a lot of weight. And in an emergency, the paramedics/doctors/firemen could have trouble cutting it off.

Titanium can be cheaper than precious metals, and it certainly has a different look. It's not as shiny, really...Whether that's preferable depends on the look you're going for.

  3. Myself and my husband wear platinum bands, but for deployments he wears a titanium band. They are very light very strong and not at all expensive. I believe we paid $150 for his. Most jewelers carry them. his looks as new as the day we bought it and it has been on 2 tours of Afghanistan and 3 tours of Iraq.

  4. Well, it is Titanium.

The main downside being that it will be impossible to cut off in an emergency situation.

    That is about it.

    I love mine.

  5. The only reason gold would need a dip is if it was plated gold.  My rings are gold we have never had to have any work done on them.  My husbands is 10 kt as he also deploys and works hard, it is a harder weight of gold.

  6. Guys like Titanium, (this guy does anyway.) It's more masculine. I don't know how it is for girls though.

  7. Titanium is really really really a great choice for a wedding band metal. since its durable and easily manufactured it wont cost as much. here are some really nice ones...http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/im...

  8. I have platinum and my husband has titanium. I think that for most men plat. is too soft, not to mention really expensive in mens rings because they are typically thick and heavy. Titanium is great for men because it is really durable, my husband opens beer bottles with his and there isn't a single dent in it, but it can not be resized so you will possibly have to get him a new ring down the road. On the plus side men's fingers don't change in size as much as women's.

On to Platinum, for you unless you work very hard with your hands, should be fine. While the rhodium wears off of the platinum in time, they rhodium dip all white metal rings before selling them, the ring doesn't become that dull. I've had my ring for almost 6 years and the only place that it is scratched or dull is on the under side that you can't see anyways. As for the prongs platinum prongs are stronger than gold, just be sure that you get a ring with nice heavy prongs. One downside to platinum is the price, it is very expensive.

White gold is pretty and affordable for a white metal. With wear some white gold will start to yellow, although very slightly. The higher quality gold you buy the less likely it will yellow. It is a great white metal that is affordable.

Titanium is durable and affordable, titaniumera.com is a great site with lots of neat styles of rings. Overstock.com has a great selection of men's rings super cheap, there really isn't a quality difference with titanium it is not an expensive metal, just differences in price based on complexity of design.

  9. If I remember right, titanium rings cannot be sized, so you have to buy them in the perfect size. The problem is, hands change, so if you need to fix that later you won't be able to. You can't make it smaller or larger.

  10. My husband has a titanium band and i have a white gold band. We chose titanium because he is a builder and titanium is a strong metal that is hard to bend and is very light weight. It has faint scratches but nothing any other ring wont get. It does lose its shine a bit but nothing a quick clean wont fix. As for price his band was about $150 compared to the $1000 plus they wanted for platinum.

My white gold band is developing a yellow patch so i will have to get this dipped in the future. It has taken a few years to wear and it is  Nothing that is very noticeable.

  11. If titanium is in the budget, and you like the way it looks. Then go for it, titanium is an excellent metal that by far is the best for all your worries. A car could basically run over it with no damage, it's a super strong element.
