Question:

Title IV (Financial Aid ) for Distance Education at Foreign Institutions?

I've been told that the Department of Education no longer endorses Title IV (Financial Aid ) for Distance Education at Foreign Institutions. I did some searching but haven't yet been able to confirm or deny this. I have, though, seen where Salliemae offers it. Can anyone confirm whether this is ture or not please? I am thinking of studying for my Doctorate in Social Science at University of Leicester in the UK.

  1. Prob the easiest way to check this is to go to the Dept of Ed website and see if the school is listed as okay to receive title IV funds.  Here is the link.

  2. If you find a US school that offers study abroad as a program, then you can use your title IV money.  The title IV money has to go directly to a US school, it cannot be sent to an international school.

Sallie Mae will let you use private loans to study abroad, you CANNOT use the stafford loans through Sallie Mae, as they are title IV and must be certified by a US school.

Check to see if you can apply to a school in the US that offers a study abroad program with the school you wish to attend.  You can study abroad for more then 1 semester.
