Title contenders at this year’s WGC-HSBC Champions-Part 1
In 2009, HSBC Champions was given the status of a WGC event, which made this tournament not only special but more competitive. This year’s event will take place at the Olazabal Course in Mission Hill Golf Club.
The event tees off on the 29th of October. Here, we will take a look at the title contenders for the illustrious title.
Webb Simpson
Webb Simpson has had a very successful year at home and on the golf course as well. The American has been very consistent with his game.
Although he recorded just one victory this year but it was the most important one. Simpson won his first major title this year, at the US Open.
The world number eight then went on to have a remarkable Ryder Cup performance.. Although the Americans lost it, but his performance at the Medinah Club was pretty satisfactory.
The US Open champion will be taking part in this year’s WGC-HSBC Champions. He got entry as a major winner.
The field at the Mission Hills Club would be challenging but Simpson certainly has the skill to claim his first WGC Title.
The Olazabal Course will suit Simpson’s game. The course is designed in a way to help players who have an all round game and Webb certainly fits in that category.
Bubba Watson
Bubba Watson is one of the finest ball strikers one could ever see. He not only hits the ball a long mile, but he hits is with precision and accuracy.
This year, he completely dazzled everyone with his magnificent shots throughout the season.
Watson too has been very consistent, registering two second place finishes. However, his highlight of the season came when he won the Masters in the playoff.
Recently, Bubba has been in fine form. He played some tremendous golf in the Ryder Cup as well.
If he continues to play shots like the ones he played in the Masters, then surely the world number seven will be a force to reckon with at the Olazabal course.
Ernie Els
Who would have thought Ernie Els would even be playing at the WGC-HSBC Champions? Ernie made it to the event, thanks to his magnificent last two rounds at the Open Championship this year.
It was a big surprise for everybody when the South African won the Open Championship but he clearly deserved it.
Recently, there has been a dip in his form but that is what veterans are all about. One never knows when they will come up with a match winning performance.
If Ernie plays with kind of form he showed at the Open Championship, then he will surely make things interesting in China.
Rory McIlroy
By far, the Northern Irishman has been the player of the year. Rory McIlroy started the season slowly but after August, he has been in sublime form.
He won the PGA Championship at Kiawah Islands with a record eight shots and then his back to back victories in the FedEx Cup Playoffs really set the tone for him.
The world number one also put up a very successful Ryder Cup appearance. Not only did Europe retain the trophy, but he played some excellent golf in Chicago.
The man from Belfast is in hot form currently and if he lands in China with such form, then there is no doubt that he will win the WGC-HSBC Champions.
