Title contenders for this year’s Travelers Championship
US Open 2012 is history now, Webb Simpson won, end of story. However, things move on and next up is the Travelers Championship, at the TPC River Highlands.
Many big names are featuring in this year’s event, including the freshly crowned US Open Champion. Along with him are people like Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan, and the defending champion Fredrik Jacobson.
So the competition is healthy and tough, but there can only be one winner. Let us take a look at the contenders for the Travelers Championship.
Ryan Moore - the guy has made cuts in the last few events and has finished among the top-8 thrice on the PGA Tour. He has been the runner-up twice at the Travelers, most recently being last year.
Michael Thompson – he finished 4th last year at the Travelers and has been in good form. He recently finished T2 at the US Open. Thompson appears to be in a good frame of mind, only time will tell how he performs in the upcoming event.
Hunter Mahan – when Hunter comes to the Travelers Championship, he performs well, he has been a previous winner and has been the runner-up twice.
He has won twice this year as well but the thing is that he has not been in good form recently. His best finish after the Masters was T19 at the Memorial, which way below expectations.
If he wants to turn his luck around this season, this is the right moment for him. However, if he fails to do well, then there might be some issues in his game, hindering his performance.
Bryce Molder – the guy has got some decent stats at this golf course (16th in GIR and 2nd in SGP). Molder has enjoyed some success at the Travelers. In 2006, he finished T6 and in 2009, at T19. As a whole, Bryce Molder is not a big
threat.
Fredrick Jacobson – he is the defending champion and this is the first time he is defending any title. Therefore, he will surely be pumped up. He has performed well in the US Open as well, where he reached final round comfortably.
Webb Simpson – we all know that Simpson had a great last week, he won the US Open. The question is whether he is mentally ready for it?
Coming straight after such a big victory can sometimes be very distracting, as one cannot focus very properly. Media would focus mainly on him, also, people would be on his right and left.
This can sometimes distract a player massively. However, everybody is expecting a good performance from his side.
John Merrick – his last three trips to the TPC River Highlands have been fairly good, he has finished T9, T34 and T11. Plus, he was 2nd at the FedEx St. Jude Classic, who knows we might see a surprise package.
James Driscoll – he has fairly good finishes in the previous appearances, which he had here. Last year, he stood 5th, in 2010, he was T27 and in 2009, he finished at T34.
Matt Kuchar – this is a tricky one! Kuchar has not featured in this tournament since 2008, but maybe he is appearing this time to add up some Ryder Cup points to his table. Everyone on the Tour knows he has a solid all round game, which gives him a good
chance.
