Question:

Titleist Vokey Variations?

I'm looking to buy a few Titleist Vokey Spin Milled wedges. I'm not a great player (high 90s) but I took a bunch of lessons over the winter when I was abroad and I think I've improved a lot, especially in short game.

I have a Taylor Made pitching wedge and was thinking of getting a 54 degree 10 bounce and a 58 degree 08 bounce wedges.

I like to hit a lot of loft close to the green and thus need a wedge to be able to hit very high loft on the fairway within 25 feet of the green. But also I need a wedge to be able to get out of rough. Which two wedges are good for me?

Which type of wedge in general is good for the rough?

I've tried demos of a few types of bounces and the bounce only seems to make a difference in terms of loft when i'm trying to hit 25 feet or more.

  1. I would have to say go with a 56 and a 60. I can hit the sand wedge (56) about 80-90 yards out of the rough, while the 60 is just amazing. It creates so many shot possibilities from inside of 60 yards. I would really recomend it.

As for finish, I would get spin milled on the 60, and regular on the 56. The spin milled is so strong that sometimes you can roll it off the front of the green. But with the 60, you can stop it on a dime.

I hope this helps a lot. However, if you notice a gap between the 56 and your pitching wedge, you might want to look into a 52 degree wedge. I would again say no spin milled for that as well, not because the spin milled is bad (it rocks) but because it puts so much spin on the ball.

  2. I highly suggest sticking with the 54 and 58 degrees although I own a full set of Vokey's (48, 52, 56, and 60) and I love them unfortunately they arent Spin Milled. I work at a golf store and the Spin Milled's sell quick. The 54 is a great club because the club can open up like a sand wedge but still run it out like a gap. I also suggest that you at least try the 60 degrees because it can get ridicoulously high around the green and can tear through the rough. Best of luck.

  3. One thing I will suggest is getting a tour chrome color wedge. Trust me, you will want to buy the oil can because it looks so dam good. I think its better to keep all of your irons the same color.. As far as bounce that depends on the type of grass you are playing on. Is the rough thick or thin around your area? The guys at the golf shop should be able to answer the bounce question for you once you tell them how tall the rough is in your area. Whatever you choose its gona be a good wedge. I love mine. Cheers.

  4. I have a Titleist Vokey 56 and a 58.  the 58 is a spin milled wedge.  I also have a callaway x tour wedge i would not give up for any thing.  its a 58 degree 11 bounce i also shot in the upper 90's i would think about the callaway and you will begin to like it more you use it.  thats my opinion

  5. Vokey spin milled wedges are like soft butter on bread.  They are very smooth, easy to hit, and stop the ball quicker, in my opinion.

The bounce on the wedges will be an issue to consider for shots from a fairway.  A 60 degree wedge with 4 degree bounce will be easier to hit than one with an 8 degree bounce from the fairway, but probabaly harder to hit from the sand or rough.

For wedges, maybe a 56-14 for sand, and either 60-04 (higher loft, less total distance) or a non-vokey SM 52-10 as a gap wedge (less loft, more distance, and can open the face for flop shots with less issue because of the lower bounce).

  6. Alright, since you need a higher lofted wedge to get out of the rough. I would say a 56 degree wedge of either any cleveland wedge or a mizuno black seires because both of those wedges get the ball high in the air and get a lot of backspin if you want to.
