  1. We've had TiVo, AT&T (Dish) and Comcast DVRs. TiVo has the easiest interface.  We had Dish a long time ago, and switched to DirecTV because at the time, Dish DVR could not record two programs at once.  We were very happy for many years with our DirecTV Tivo.  Unfortunately, DirecTV no longer uses TiVo, so when we switched to a HD TV, we had to get the DirecTV DVR, which was horrible.

So we switched to Comcast.  My advice is:  Stay far, far away from Comcast.  The Comcast DVR is actually very nice when it works, but the company itself is awful- the employees are unhelpful and deceitful and they all tell you something different, plus they raise their prices after a year (despite some CSRs, desperate to get you as a customer, will promise you that they won't raise their prices- that is a lie).  We have had Comcast for 2 months and it's been nothing but problems with the CSRs and the technicians.  I cannot count how many hours we've spent on the phone with them trying to solve problems with the receivers or billing.  It took 4 tech visits to get Comcast installed, and the techs have been back 4 times in the two months since then because of problems with the receiver.

Because of all the aggravation and poor service we've experienced with Comcast (even one of Comcast's techs said Comcast was a horrible company and we should cancel our service and look elsewhere!), we are looking into AT&T, which uses Dish Network DVRs.  Their DVR now records two programs at once, but it needs two TVs to do it.  I'm not crazy about that- we record way more programs than that, but at this point it's the only alternative.

As far as pricing, AT&T or DirecTV is probably the least expensive- or it will be after Comcast raises your prices in a year.  For a stand-alone TiVo unit, you have to buy it, which I think is a few hundred dollars, and then pay a monthly fee (more than your DVR fee with the cable or satellite companies).  That's on top of paying for your cable/satellite.

I hope I've helped you with your decision.  I'm not crazy about any of the choices available, they all have faults, so we just have to find the company with the least aggravating faults.  It will be interesting to read the other replies to this question.  Good luck.

  2. AT&T

it keeps it prices the same. (they have no 6 month promtional offer like comcast)
