Question:

Tivo multi-room viewing without service?

I am getting a new 80-hr DT S2 TiVo to replace a 40-hr S2 with a tuner that is starting to flake out. I am thinking of keeping the old TiVo around for multi-room viewing (no need for a working tuner). Will I need to keep paying for an additional TiVo subscription for that box in order to do MVR to it?

  1. Yes.  We have 5 Tivo's and if we even drop the antennae off the top of the set, we can't transfer from that room until we put it back up and restart that settop box.  Plus, you have to register the boxes you want to allow MVR with on your Tivo account -- so that nixes you there.  You should just keep the second box on your account -- they usually only charge about $6.95 for a second box.  Pretty worth it to have around.
