My grandparents were looking at getting tivo at their home, and were wondering if when they have subscribed and have recorded shows, will they be able to unplug the tivo, take it to their other home without tive service and watch the stored shows? or will it only work at their first home?

thank you so much!

  1. No problem! Yes, you can take a TiVo to a new location and watch previously recorded shows. I've done this myself.

The shows are recorded on the hard disk drive built-into the TiVo.  The TiVo does not need to connect to a network to watch the shows.  However, if they have a monthly subscription, the player may still need to be connected to a phone line or network connection to update subscription information when the subscription expires.  I don't know for sure because I have a lifetime subscription on my TiVo.

I've taken the TiVo to a new location, changed cable companies, recorded new shows, and watched old shows.

Now, this must be a real TiVo (made by TiVo) and not a Cable Company DVR.  You may be still be able to do this with a Cable Company DVR, but I haven't tried it.
