Tizway out of the Breeders’ Cup and retired at the age of 6 with a ligament injury
Instead of going to the Breeders’ Cup, the 6-year-old James Bond trained Tizway is going to remain at Belmont Park for about a week until being sent to Spendthrift Farm in Lexington.
The main contender for the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic, Tizway will miss the race with a ligament injury. Trainer James Bond confirmed the news saying the injury was detected after a routine training session at Belmont Park on 25 October, 2011.
The William Clifton Jr. owned son of Tiznow, out of Bethany by Dayjur, was brought back to the barn and that is where trainer James Bond noticed some heat on his left front leg and some swelling.
Tizway went through an ultrasound and it was confirmed there that it is a “small lesion” on his ligament, which forced his connections to retire the 6-year-old horse.
Usually with a ligament injury, the horse is given off a couple of months off to get healed and then take him back on, but due to special circumstances around Tizway will make him retire from racing.
James Bond really wanted Tizway to go up to 1 ¼ miles to show the world that he can actually go the distance. Tizway has been unlucky with his health recently, prior to his retirement he was the favourite to win the Jockey Club Gold Cup but missed the race
with a fever.
Tizway would have been one of the top betting choices in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs on 5 November, 2011, based on his back to back wins in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap (Met Mile) and the Grade 1 Whitney Handicap.
Under jockey Rajiv Maragh after a couple of third place finishes in the season, Tizway turned in around with a win in the Met Mile Handicap at Belmont Park on 30 May, 2011, over a mile with the winning time of 1 minute and 32.90 seconds.
He went on to bag the Grade 1 Whitney Handicap then at Saratoga at about 1 1/8 miles on 6 August, 2011.
Tizway was seven wins out of 20 career starts, and he had the earnings of a whopping $1.3 million.
