Tizway recovering fine and turned in a breeze of five furlongs, skipping the Jockey Club Gold Cup and sizing up the Breeders’ Cup Classic
Tizway has regained health after feeling feverish before one of his workout sessions ahead of the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup, but he is not returning to the Grade 1 $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup field, which will commence on 1 October, 2011, at Belmont
Park.
The leading horse of the handicap division this year, Tizway returned to the work tab on the morning of 27 September at Saratoga, after missing his scheduled workout session last week due to fever.
Trained by James Bond for owner William Clifton Jr. Tizway will now train up to the Grade 1 $5million Breeders’ Cup Classic on 5 November, 2011, at Churchill Downs.
The 6-year-old son of Tiznow, out of Bethany by Dayjur, Tizway breezed five furlongs in 1 minute and 1.44 seconds, over the Oklahoma training track.
It was a lengthy workout, just to assess the situation after coming out of illness, as the Saratoga clocker’s clocked the time of 13.20, 25.20 and 37.20 and then he galloped out a total of 6 furlongs in 1 minute and 15.40 seconds.
Trainer James Bond was pleased with the work Tizway turned in and said We had a hiccup unfortunately last Thursday. I was going to wait and work him tomorrow, but there are showers on the way, so I thought I’d better be in front of it and not behind it.
He worked an easy five-eighths, on his own terms. Hopefully, there are no more ripples in the water.”
Tizway has been doing really well, and has won two grade 1 races on the trot, starting off with the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap at about 1 mile at Belmont Park on 30 May, 2011, under jockey Rajiv Maragh, with the winning time of 1 minute and 32.90 seconds.
Next up was the 1 1/8 mile test in the Grade 1 Whitney Handicap, the toughest of them all, with the likes of Flat Out and Giant Oak to hurdle Tizway, but he managed to get past both veteran runners and win the race at Saratoga on 6 August.
The two back to back wins have helped Tizway to climb top of the older male division.
Leading up to the Breeders’ Cup, the son of Tiznow is on a seven or eight day work, that’s what his trainer James Bond hopes.
