To English natives, what do you understand if i tell you "building up a market index"?

Hi,

I've translated this from French ("Building up a market index") but it sounds weird to me.

Could a native English tell me what he/she understands?

I want to talk about the creation of a market index but the word "creation" only refers to the "birth" of the index (the fact that it is "alive", if you know what I mean).

In my mind, "building up" also refers to all that i've been done before (research, tests, reliability, and so on).

So, have you ever heard this before?

Do you have any suggestion?

I guess it might depend on whether you are using the expression when talking to people in management and/or stock exchange who understand a lot of the jargon or whether you are talking to the average employee.

I have little background knowledge of what a market index is, and if you told me "I've built up a market index", then I would think it means: "I've used a database programme, like Microsoft Access, and entered a large collection of stocks that can now be compared and searched for in that database document.  I've been doing it for a while now, so there are a lot of entries."

If you said "I've created a market index" I would assume that your database was in it's beginning stages.
