  1. No you don't need binoculars to see the whales. They come up close to the boats.

The Whale Watching Tours have an office at the Whaleweigh Station". No joke that is for real.

Bus or train please make the effort for an experience of a lifetime.

  2. The train is a really expensive way to get around NZ so I would def check out bussing first. Some good web sites are

    http:\\nakedbus.co.nz

    http:\\www.intercity.co.nz

Also sometimes the whalewatching boats get full so make sure you book first or at least ring.

Good luck! Be sure to check out the seals at the spit as well as the whales.

  3. The Whale Watch Office used to be in the Railway Station.

If it's not still there, it will be very handy.

It will take only 6 minutes to walk from one end of the town to the other.

As someone else has said, book a day or 2 in advance.

  4. i wish i lived in NZ to have the opportunity, you are very lucky

  5. Catch the train! Even if its a bit more than getting on a bus its so much more worth it. The train has an open carriage that you can view all the beautiful landscape on the way. They serve food and beverages also. This is such a simple trip, Kaikoura is very small and once in the town you only have to go to the information center down the main strip to book your whale watch adventure. Make sure you get the weather right though. Kaikoura is at its best on a hot summers day.

  6. google kaikoura and whale watching, the local tour operators will have offices in town (it's not a big town) there is also a local bus from Christchurch that may be cheaper than the train and if your game hich hiking is still legal in NZ
