Question:

To Kill a Mockingbird. Interesting comparison?

I've been working alot with To Kill a Mockingbird and this just came to me:

Is Scout defending Walter Cunningham similar to Atticus defending Tom Robinson?

As in, when Scout defends Walter she gets into trouble and her teacher and the kids in the class see her a bit differently.

& When Atticus defends Tom, he falls into trouble when his kids are attacked. He is also thought about differently by some people in the town.

It's sort of hard to understand, the way i stated things, but it's the best i could explain it right now. Do you agree? If not, what are your opinions on what i think?

  1. I understand what you're saying but remember that Scout then got mad at Walter because the teacher got mad at her. Atticus didn't get mad at Tom Robinson. He stayed at his side.

So your comparison is correct but only for that fact. But, either way the comparison makes sense.

    Hope I helped!

  2. I agree.  I think that what you  have described is one of the parallels in the novel.

There are numerous on line resources to help you with this novel, and with questions such as this one.  Many of them offer chapter summaries, list of characters, character sketches, discussions of themes, setting, imagery, and symbolism, etc.  Do a search for “study guides for To Kill a Mockingbird” etc., and you will find many sites.  Also, do a search here on yahoo answers for To Kill a Mockingbird and you will find a wealth of information.

  3. I understand what you mean. When Aunt Alexandria was more or less going into hysterics about how awful the boy was and that he would never be allowed to come over, Scout refused to give in, and even though she knew she couldn't change Aunt Alexandria's mind, she still made her point and tried to make her understand that Walter was fine, though his life is different, and his family's role in the community was low.
