Question:

To Many Weapons These Days?

I was recently looking into buying a camping/outdoors knife, and I noticed that most knives manufactured today seem to be directed at combatt and fighting. What about parents who are getting sons pocketknives? who wants to give a 6 year old 5 inch death machine?

  1. You dont need to buy those. You can buy a pocket knife from Swiss knifes.http://www.swissarmy.com/MultiTools/Page...                     Go here they have nice pocket knives for kids.

  2. all the previous comments aside;

    the most practical camping knife is actually a multi tool. I have been to many different environments camping/backpacking and have never required anything more (blade wise) then what comes on a multi-tool. I would suggest one with a locking blade/tool feature. I am not going to recommend any particular brand, but look around there are some reliable ones that are not unreasonably priced. I have used the same one for almost 10 years now with no failures yet. Just beware the dime store 10 dollar versions as they are cheap quality and even if you find one at that price with a locking feature (unlikely though) it would not stand up to much pressure and I would not want to trust my childs fingers to a cheap lockblade.

  3. If you plan on starting to teach your child the responsability of owning a pocket knife, I would suggest http://www.swissarmy.com/MultiTools/Page... this was the first knife I owned at age 6.

    As for the death machine comment, most knives are marketed towards adult buyers and are not intended for children. Last time I was at bass pro or cabelaes I didnt see alot of combat or fighting knives.

  4. just because a blade is more than 4 inches doesn't make it a death machine. my first blade was a hatchet my grandma gave me at age 3. 24 years later, and i still haven't killed anybody! unbelievable, i know. the majority of pocket knives have blades well under 5 inches. 3 1/2 seems to be the norm. just don't get anything that says "fury" mtech" or any other gas station brands.

    old timers are good, but schrade went under, you can still find 'em at pawnshops and junk stores. buck, gerber, cold steel, benchmade, crkt, and ka-bar all make wonderful knives of any style you want, for fairly reasonable prices.

  5. a pocket knife is a weapon used in the wrong hands, it does not differ from  a 5 inch death machine.  If your looking for an old fashion style pocket knife that you consider is not a death machine, try the 99 cent stores, they sell them in hardware.

    Maybe your 6 year old should not have a knife in the first place, he is underage to carry

  6. i bought my father an i a set of CASE pocket knives from one of those large outdoor stores....REI i believe it was....

    get him a nice one, they were like 35 bucks a piece.  the CASE ones i bought were very sharp tho, so be careful!!

  7. You are just not looking in the right place.  There are MANY types of pocket, multi tool, etc knives on the market that are suitable for a supervised 6 year old.

    Camping knives are big and not suitable for a 6 YO.  They are for survival, cutting wood, killing and/or filleting animals or fish.

    You want to look for a pocket or utility knife.

  8. Personally I like the german boker they have a wide variety of pocket knives and they are beautiful knives that was my first knife and I now have a wide variety of them so I would go for something like that if I wanted a good quality memorable knife

  9. I have no idea how to answer this silly, pointless question. Somehow, a 5 inch tactical knife seems to offend you, but the thought that ANYONE can walk into Walmart and buy a foot-long knife doesn't seem to be on your radar. I also find it hard to believe that with all the different styles of knives out there, there are none to be had for a responsible, supervised child. I do give you a creative point for calling a 5 inch knife a "death machine" though, very sensational. I bet you have a drawer full of them at home.

  10. Maybe try to shop somewhere other than the Army surplus store. Most real camping stores have a wide variety of traditional pocket knives and multitools.
