Not really thinking Amtrak/VIA Rail is a great option, it'd be a marathon!

DFW to Chicago almost 24 hours, Chicago to Buffalo another ten, then three more just to get to Toronto. And THEN nearly another 24 hours to Halifax.

Your best bet is to fly.
