I will be breastfeeding for the first time and this is my second child. Can anyone give me some insight as to the better breast pumps out there and what the price range is? Thanks.

  1. I have the Ameda Purely Yours and it's pretty good (my insurance covered it, but I think it retailed for around $250-300.  I also have a small Evenflo handheld that I keep in my car at all times (just in case).  It's not bad for the price (I think it was less than $30).

  2. How frequently will you be looking to express milk?  The reason I ask is that this can determine whether you need a manual or an electric pump (the electric ones pump faster but are significantly more expensive).

I own a Tommee Tippee Freedom manual breast pump which is fantastic for expressing an occasional feed - really easy to clean too.  It costs about $90 in Australia - I'd imagine it'd be a similar price in the US.

Congrats for making the decision to breastfeed and I wish you all the best!

  3. You can't go wrong with the Medela Pump in Style.

As for storage and bottles, I was very happy with the Avent system.  In fact, I used their hand pump, which hooks right up to the bottles, and I was able to pump a lot of milk just with the hand pump.

  4. Medela.  They are great pumps and a great company to work with if you have problems or questions.  You can find new, factor sealed pumps on ebay for a little cheaper than retail outlets.  I am home with the baby most of the time so I have the swing, if your going to be going back to work you'll probably want the pump in style.  Good luck.

  5. everyone i know swears by the medela pump in style advanced. all my working mom friends used it. just make sure you get the advanced with the two phases- it is much easier than trying to switch from fast to slow yourself (which you probably are wondering what that means- but it's hard to explain... lol)

i am a SAHM, so i used a Medela Swing. it is battery operated with a single nozzle. it's very compact- you can fit it in a diaper bag even with all the other baby gear. it's also less money but not as powerful.

if you google the pump name, the results will come up with a few price points at the top. google is good about helping you do price comparisons.

you can call your local la leche league. they can also help with your decision. www.lll.org

congrats on making a wonderful decision. good luck with breast feeding. it's a wonderful thing for mama and baby.
